February 26, 2024
Patrick Clifford Smythe, late of Regina, Saskatchewan passed away peacefully but sooner than expected on February 26, 2024 just before his 70th birthday (March 11, 1954) at Regina Wascana Grace Hospice after fourteen plus months living with double stage-four cancer.
Patrick was born in Urbana, Illinois to Jennie and Dallas Smythe. His sister Carol arrived seven years later in Champaign, Illinois. At age ten he immigrated with his family to Regina, Saskatchewan where his father Dallas Smythe PhD helped create University of Regina's Social Sciences Departments as Dean. Patrick wed briefly in his early twenties but by his mid-twenties Patrick and his wife and life partner Elaine had moved to British Columbia where they lived in Langley. Several years in Krestova in the Kootenays followed. In 2001 they returned to Regina.
Patrick loved working in social services, with fulfilling years in Langley leading the Jobclub program and in Regina at an anti-poverty non-profit and the Phoenix Housing Society. He was a passionate longtime fan of the Grateful Dead. He was a dedicated Roughriders fan and loved watching football from both sides of the border, baseball and basketball. In 2016 Patrick became a firm friend of Bill W. and was deeply grateful for eight strong years of recovery. Pat found serenity, strength and friendship in the local AA program.
Patrick is survived by his wife Elaine Smythe (Siddons); son Jesse Nelson of Fort St. James, British Columbia.; his sister Carol Kergan (Smythe) of Kelowna, British Columbia.; niece Keely Kergan of Kelowna, British Columbia; half siblings Susan Nissen (Smythe) of Los Gatos, California and Roger Smythe of Auburn, Washington; his two beloved dogs Aiko and Jacamo.
Patrick was predeceased by parents Dallas (1907-1992) and Jennie Smythe (Newsome) (1922-1999); half sister Sandra Bibb (Smythe) (1939-2023); and many beloved pets.
Patrick’s family would like to thank Dr. M. Collins, family doctor Dr. Osama Souied, oncologist Sandra and Erin, palliative social workers, Chaplain Jennifer and palliative home care nurses at both the Pasqua Hospital and Regina Wascana Grace Hospice for the wonderful care.
A Celebration of the Life for Patrick will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. in the Genesis Hall, 1165 Pasqua Street, Regina, Saskatchewan.

I first met Patrick when he and my deceased brother Richard were friends in high school. Patrick and my brother Richard were more closer than he and I at that time period. As the years passed and at the time of my brother's passing of 11 years ago our friendship became closer. Especially when he found out about his cancer. Patrick and I reminisced about the old days, about him and Richard and how much he wanted to see one last birthday. I found Patrick to be a great conversationalist. He was quite intelligent in many subjects. I will miss that in him. The memories are a way of holding onto things that were and the things you never want to lose. It’s not what we have in life, but who we have in our lives. And you’ll never know the value of what you have till it’s gone. So I say not goodbye but farewell. You will be greatly missed Patrick by many. Until we meet again one day.

I met and knew Pat since 1969 when we were both in high school. We had a ton of adventures in the old 'hippie' days .. a highlight being with him at the Festival Express Concert in Calgary on July 4, 1970 when we saw the Grateful Dead for the 1st time as well as Janis Joplin in concert. Pat was a great friend for over 50 years and we were both friends of Bill W. I am glad I got to see Patrick a few times in the last year. He was loved and he will be missed.
