December 30, 2025

Matthew (Matt) Robert Matcyk, age 68, passed away on December 30, 2025 in Regina, Saskatchewan. Though he had recently moved to Regina, Matt spent most of his life in Churchbridge - a town he truly loved and proudly called home.
Matt was born on December 10, 1957, in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, and grew up near Wroxton, where he attended school before continuing his education in Yorkton. In 1977, he met the love of his life, Gwen. They were married in 1982 and settled in Churchbridge, where they created a home that reflected Matt perfectly - complete with a well-loved garage and beautiful gardens he and Gwen tended together for many years.
Matt trained in automotive mechanics, but when the opportunity came to join the Department of Highways, he found his dream job and never looked back. He especially loved driving snowplows and took great pride in his work, serving for nearly four decades before retiring in 2020. Ask anyone, and they’ll tell you Matt could fix just about anything. His granddaughter Rosie summed it up best: “Papa can fix anything.”
A lifelong sports fan, Matt cheered hardest for the Boston Bruins, Saskatchewan Roughriders, and Toronto Blue Jays - and was a huge Bobby Orr fan. He loved being able to witness memorable seasons and big wins in recent years, including Grey Cup victories and Blue Jays playoff runs. When he wasn’t watching a game, you could often find him at a garage sale hunting for a deal, adding to his collections of hockey cards, antiques, and interesting finds. Matt also loved fishing and enjoyed trips to Northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba, as well as spending a great deal of time at Lake of the Prairies.
Matt was deeply involved in the Churchbridge community. He believed in giving back and staying connected, whether through the Lions Club, town council, minor sports, or simply meeting friends for coffee. No matter where he went, Matt was talking to someone - and usually discovering they knew someone he knew. He had a gift for conversation and connection.
Known for his goofy sense of humor, Matt loved to joke around and make people laugh. He especially loved kids, and if there were children nearby, Matt would be right there entertaining them, telling jokes, and soaking up the joy.
Matt is lovingly remembered by his wife Gwendolyn; his son Kane, daughter Meaghan (Danny) Jones and his cherished granddaughter Rosie. He is also survived by his sister Joany and her husband Carlo Peeters along with niece and nephew Amy, Joey (Britney) and great-niece Madison. Matt is further survived by his brothers-and sister-in-law John Wog (Terrie) with nephew John Jr. and great-nephew Christopher, Greg Allen, Rick Rubiletz, Elaine Rubiletz with nieces and nephews Randean (Tim), Melanie, and Jeremy (Mandy) and great-nieces Phaedra (Thomas) and Ella and great-nephew Jake and Deanna (Dave) Anderson with great-nieces and nephew Julia, Raina, Tevin, Ayla, Rae, and Rosalie.
He was predeceased by his parents Robert and Mary (née Chornetski) Matcyk; his sisters Liz, Sheila, and Susan; his parents-in-law Peter and Rosie (née Olenick) Rubiletz; his brother-in-law Lorne Rubiletz; his nephew Troy Anderson; and his niece Crystal Matthew.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the Spring of 2026 when family and friends can gather to share stories, laughter, and memories - just the way Matt would have wanted. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Almassy Metz Funeral & Cremation Services.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Churchbridge Lion’s Club in Matt’s memory.
Matt will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever known for his humor and big heart.
