Lefebvre, Laurier (Sonny) Gillis

January 11, 2026

Laurier (Sonny) Gillis Lefebvre

Sonny Lefebvre, late of Regina, SK, passed away peacefully with family by his side on January 11, 2026 at the age of 91 years.

Sonny was predeceased by his parents Pierre and Cecile Lefebvre, wife Jean Lefebvre and his brother Denis Lefebvre. He is survived by his sisters Perry Friesen, Terry Lefebvre, Lou Matic and Carmen Lefebvre; his children Darcie (Dave), Pete (Jody) and Dean (Bernie); his grandchildren Tyler (Kelley), Tara (Molly), Josh (Azlynn), Dylan (Lauren), Chloe (Derrick) and Trey (Kate); his great-grandchildren Kit, Tate, Athenea, Crimsyn, Wesleigh, Sutton, Luke and another great-grandchild on the way; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Sonny was born on the family farm in Lajord, SK in the heart of the Dirty 30’s and was raised in a French-speaking household. A fitting beginning for a man who would never shy away from hard work. At the age of 15, he and his brother were sent to Saint Thomas College in North Battleford, SK with hopes that one of them might become a priest. However, Sonny’s calling was never going to be quiet contemplation. He eventually headed west to Alberta, where he worked in the oil patch for Precision Drilling. After three years he returned home and reunited with his high school sweetheart, Jean Wingert. They were married on November 24, 1956. It was around this time that he joined forces with his father-in-law in the excavation business, helping to build what is proudly known today as Wingert Construction. He became the Maestro of the Gradall boom and bucket! Sonny and Jean made their home on 8th Avenue North and welcomed their daughter Darcie in 1957, Pete in 1962 and Dean in 1963.

In later years, Sonny and Jean enjoyed many winters in Arizona. He never quite warmed up to “chasing a white ball around for four hours,” but he did enjoy staying busy with odd jobs alongside his buddies. Together they looked after seniors in the park, fixing anything and everything – often before being asked. An avid walker and accomplished hiker, he tackled many a trail in the Arizona desert. He was a stickler for neat and tidy, enjoyed his daily read of the Leader Post and the Western Producer, was a true Hab’s fan, followed the Regina Pats with a keen interest and enjoyed morning coffees with his crew at the A&W. His personality entered the room before he did. He was a smiley guy, endlessly social and an absolute extrovert. His work ethic was not something he talked about; it was simply how he lived.

His true passion, though, remained the place of his birth: the farm, the land, the endless blue sky and unforgettable sunsets. He loved nature, through and through. We will cherish his memory and miss him forever.

In Sonny’s words……. “FINITO BENITO”!

A Celebration of Sonny’s Life will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. in the Victoria Club, 1300 Victoria Avenue, Regina, Saskatchewan. We warmly invite relatives, friends, and all who knew him to revel a life well lived! In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity or cause of your choice.

Condolences

Our deepest sympathy to Darcy, Pete and Dean, and families, we were so sorry to hear of Sonny’s passing. We met your parents in Arizona and after buying our house on Renfrew found out we would be neighbours. That relationship was one that we treasured, we enjoyed their company and friendship so much. Sonny was the best, always had some stories and jokes to share, if you needed some help or tools or guidance he was there for you. Finito Benito or the computer is getting slower were his trademark words. They were our good friends and they are missed so much. You are in our thoughts at this difficult time, they are both at peace and we are thankful for that. Deepest sympathy to all of you. Bob and Sharron Batt

Our condolences to Darcie, Pete, Dean and those members of the families who we have not met. Many years have passed since we first met Sunny (this is the only way to spell his nickname, we are pretty sure all would agree, as he always brought a ray of sunshine into every situation). All we can say is this world has lost a truly wonderful human, but at the same time a lot of his good qualities, can be found in his children and undoubtedly the generations of his children following. That iconic sunny smile will be our lasting memory forever. Rest in Peace our good friend.

Sending hugs and memories to Darcie, Pete, Dean and all of Sonny’s family! My heart is heavy! Sonny was one of my favourite people. As you know, he was such a huge part of my childhood growing up on 8th Ave N. The times we spent together as families – New Years Eves, block parties, camping and road trips are memories I cherish. It was one New Years Eve gathering that Sonny convinced me to try smoked oysters – I think only he could have accomplished that! I love them to this day and always think of him when I eat one. He was always full of laughter and stories. There was never a dull moment when Sonny was around! Who but Sonny would mow dandelions with a lawn chair following the after wedding party of one of the neighborhood girls! Some of the shenanigans likely shouldn’t be shared in public but I am remembering them today.
God speed Sonny – you were one very special man.

My condolences to the entire Lefebvre family. I had the pleasure of working with and getting to know Sonny, his family and the Wingert company on a personal basis. Whenever he would pull up to the job site in his old gradual I knew it was going to be a good day. What a great role model he was to his family, friends and work mates. Many happy memories. Rest in peace Sonny.
