Joseph Hrycak

Our dear father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, Joseph Hrycak or “Joe”, passed away peacefully at the celebrated age of 96 years on the evening of Wednesday, February 28, 2024.

Joe grew up on a farm near Montmartre, SK and was one of eight children born to John and Olga Hrycak. He eventually moved to Regina to meet his future wife, Adeline Wnek of Candiac, SK. Joe and Adeline had four children together Judy, Donna, Janet, and Darrin who they raised in Regina. Adeline passed away in 1985. Joe then lived as a bachelor. Joe worked at the Hospital Laundry Services, retiring at age 65. Joe loved gardening and kept very active from May to September looking after his vegetable garden which he enjoyed sharing with his family, friends, and neighbours. Joe lived his final years at the Renaissance Retirement Home where he was fortunate to have been able to live at for over fifteen years. There, he met many acquaintances including his good friend Frances. Joe enjoyed playing cards, listening to the musical entertainment at the Renaissance and visiting.

Joe is lovingly remembered by his children: daughter Judy (Doug) with their children Colin, Shaun (Carly) and Amanda; daughter Donna; daughter Janet (Mike) with their children Brett and Jenna; son Darrin (Autumn) with their children Kyle, Ethan, and Naveed; his sister Marie (Laird); sister-in-law Mary and her family; three great-grandchildren Brooklyn, Jaxon, and Lincoln; and numerous nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his wife Adeline; parents John and Olga; parents-in-law Mike and Polly; his brothers Philip, Andrew, Mike, Frank, and George; his sister Betty; and in-laws Johnny, Mary, Mary, and Grant.

Joe loved playing cards and watching sports; especially when one of his children was playing and later his grandchildren. His favourite sport to watch was hockey, but he also enjoyed watching the Saskatchewan Roughriders play. Joe lived a quiet and simple life.

Our family wishes to thank the Palliative Care staff at the Pasqua Hospital for the loving care Joe received in his final days. A special thank you to Father Warren Dungan. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joe’s name may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society in memory of our late mother and many other loved ones that we have lost to cancer.

A Funeral Service will be held at St. Basil’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 1757 Toronto Street, Regina, SK on Thursday, April 4, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. with Father Warren Dungan presiding. There will be a lunch to follow. All family and friends are welcome. Interment to follow in Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery, 815 Assiniboine Avenue, Regina, SK.
