John William Earl Smith – known to family as “John” and to his friends as “Bill”. John passed away June 20, 2025, with his family at his side.
John was predeceased by his father William Smith; his mother Rosa Vogel; stepfather Chester Vogel; his brother Wayne Smith; stepbrother Larry Vogel; and stepsister Joan Jewer. John is survived by his wife Julianne Smith; daughter Rosa Smith (Andrew Hettema); son Maxx Randell; his grandchildren Chelsea Slessor-Smith and Camry Slessor-Smith; his brothers Barry Smith (Dawn) and Terry Vogel (Lori-Lee); stepsister Jean Crawford (Wayne); stepbrother Lindsay Vogel; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
John was born in England and immigrated to Canada as a child after World War II. Anyone who met John, knew he dedicated his life to family, friends, the military, sports and enjoying nature. If John was not traveling as a tire salesman or for the military reserve's exercises, he was probably camping, fishing, hunting, or attending a Regina Pats Game. After retiring from the tire business, John worked as a commissionaire at the RCMP barracks, where he enjoyed a new pace of life.
Celebration of John’s Life will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. in the south side field in the Regina Armoury compound, 1600 Elphinstone Street, Regina, Saskatchewan.
John’s family is incredibly grateful for all the support of his close friends and the care he received from the Palliative care team. Donations may be made in John’s or Bill’s name to either the South Saskatchewan Division of the Commissionaires or the Palliative Care Unit 3A at the Pasqua Hospital.

I knew Bill since I was 17, he was DCO in 10 and I was surprised as he turned up to inspect my parade at 2370 as I was in both for a while. He was the first to put me on the gun line and later safety tech. We were together on the senate in later years and again in Commissionaires. I shall miss your wry humor. Rest easy sir.
