McCheyne, John James (Jim)

May 24, 2026

John James (Jim) McCheyne

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Jim McCheyne, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and cherished friend. Jim was born on Saturday, August 27, 1932 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Elizabeth and Fred McCheyne. He passed peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, May 24, 2026 in Regina, Saskatchewan at the age of 93. Jim will be remembered for his unwavering kindness, sense of humor, and enduring love for his family.

Jim grew up in Winnipeg with his sisters Mary and Peggy and his brothers Wally, Bill, and Davie. Through family, school, sports, odd jobs, and paper routes he made memories and lifelong friends. He completed his formal education, graduating from Kelvin Technical High School, became a lumberjack in B.C., a Sleeping Car Conductor for CP Rail and later joined the Royal Canadian Air Force serving with distinction as an accountant. After his overseas tour, he began a long and successful career with Old Dutch Foods Ltd. in Winnipeg, first as an accountant and later moving into sales.

Jim met the love of his life, Marlyne Angus, a TCA stewardess and they were married on June 2, 1961 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Together they shared 64 wonderful years of marriage filled with love, happiness, family, and countless cherished memories.

As they started their family, Jim and Marlyne welcomed their son Scott, and moved to Regina in 1965 when Jim accepted the position of Branch Manager for Old Dutch. After settling in Regina, their family grew with the arrivals of Holly and Hope. Jim proudly remained with Old Dutch in this role until his retirement. Throughout his years with the company, he formed many lasting friendships and valued acquaintances.

Of all his accomplishments, Jim’s greatest pride was his family. He was a dedicated father and was deeply involved in supporting his children in all their activities over the years, including T-ball, softball, baseball, basketball, bowling, hockey, figure skating, swimming, Brownies, Guides, Cubs, Scouts, and anything else they wanted to try. Whether it was driving to and from games and events, travelling to tournaments, coaching, helping build backstops at the new school, or serving as President of the Albert Park Recreation Association, Jim was always there.

When the family was young, Jim spent many birthdays on annual family vacations during the last two weeks of August. These trips included visits to Winnipeg - lots and lots of trips to Winnipeg, Disneyland, South Dakota, Vancouver, Victoria, and the infamous journey through the interior of British Columbia when the famous Cache Creek vehicle breakdown occurred. The family’s brown Chevy station wagon started knocking and needed engine work before the trip could continue. The unexpected extra days at the motel were enjoyed by all. Many “Are We There Yet?” moments were heard throughout those adventures.

While working at Old Dutch, the kids fondly remembered trips to the warehouse where Dad would help load drivers at night or on weekends. He would place a cardboard box on the conveyor belt and push us through the building as the rollers whirred and zipped them back and forth.

Jim and Marlyne built their first house in Regina in 1967 and spent eight years there, building memories and friendships that would last a lifetime. In 1975, they built and moved into their forever home, where they happily lived for the next 50 years. There they watched their children grow up, marry and have children and grandchildren of their own, along with many beloved family pets. Family gatherings often included Jim grilling his famous homemade hamburgers on the BBQ for everyone to enjoy.

In retirement, Jim enjoyed following the stock market and sharing investment tips with his son. He also loved spending time with his “Track Friends,” handicapping and betting on the thoroughbreds and harness racers at Exhibition Park. Jim never met a stranger - he loved chatting with anyone and everyone. At one point in retirement, he worked as a shuttle driver for a local car dealership, where he made every guest’s ride more enjoyable with his charm and wit.

One of Jim’s greatest joys was his family, especially his grandchildren, who brought joy and purpose into his later years and filled his world with laughter and love. He was an incredibly devoted grandfather and treasured the time he spent with each of them. For the grandchildren who lived in Regina, many mornings began with breakfast at Nannie and Papa’s before Jim would take them to daycare and in later years to school, picking them up again at the end of the day and in the summer, taking them for ice cream. Whether sharing stories, offering advice, attending activities, or simply spending time together, he created countless special memories with all of his grandchildren. The love, guidance, and unwavering support he gave so freely will remain in their hearts and memories forever.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Marlyne; his children Scott (Theresa), Holly (Ken), and Hope; his grandchildren Alysha, Sarah, Cassidy, and Tyler; and his great-grandchild Grayson.

Jim will be deeply missed, but his love for his family, strength, support and the many memories he created will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, generosity, and a life well lived.

The family would also like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the many home care workers and palliative care nurses whose compassion, kindness, and support helped Jim remain comfortable and well cared for. Their care and commitment brought great comfort to Jim and his family and will always be deeply appreciated.

At Jim’s request, cremation has taken place and no memorial service will be held. Family and friends are encouraged to connect with the family, share memories together, or leave personal messages of condolences for the family.
