Horst was born in Berlin, Germany on April 22, 1934 to his parents Alfred and Charlotte. He was the eldest of 5 children.

Growing up during the war was hard. There was no future there so in 1956 he came to Canada for a future.

He left Breaham, Germany by ship. The first night the ship was hit by a freighter. They limped back to Breaham. They put the passengers on a plane. They boarded the plane and after a short time in the air they had engine problems and had to land in Scotland. The problem got fixed and they were on their way. They landed in Newfoundland and then flew then to Montreal, Quebec. From Montreal he took the train to Regina, Saskatchewan.

Horst did a few odd jobs then got a job at Borden’s washing pots and pans. He took several courses in baking and worked his way up to manager after several years. He went to the baker’s conventions and on October 29, 1979 he got the trophy for the best bread and buns in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta.

After many years at Borden’s, he went to Safeway. He had a chance to use his skills there. He had worked in every Safeway store in Regina. He trained many bakers. He enjoyed baking and made the first footlong bun for the footlong wiener. He tried different things. He loved his work. Horst’s father was a professional baker in Berlin and during the war Hitler made him one of his bakers.

In 1960, Barrymore held a revival meeting at the old exhibition grounds. Horst had never heard the gospel before. He was a changed man. He accepted Jesus his Savior.

In 1963 he married Phyllis Nichols and they had 4 children David, Melvin, Bonnie and Michael.

As a family we went camping every year the children were growing up. Phyllis’s family from British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan would meet us at Kimball Lake, great memories. Horst loved camping.

Horst is survived by his wife of 63 years Phyllis; his 3 sons David (fiancé Paulina), Melvin and Michael (Gayle); 5 grandkids Colby, Reegen, Rayoh, Matt and Josh Will; and his sister Ingrid in Germany.

He was predeceased by his parents Alfred and Charlott; siblings Elegard, Geesla and Hartmut; and his daughter Bonnie Perreault.

Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, July 29, 2026 at 2:30 p.m. in Heritage Alliance Church, 3575 Hillsdale Street, Regina, Saskatchewan.
