Hildegard Schwartz (nee Schneider) passed away on June 15, 2026, in Emerald Park, SK at the age of 82.
She will be lovingly remembered by her son Daryl (Shannon) Schwartz, daughter Denise (Paul) Hawman; grandchildren Courtney (Kale) and Logan Schwartz, Joelle (Christopher) Smith and Brittany Hawman; sisters-in-law Shirley Schwartz and Josephine Ehman and numerous nieces and nephews.
Hildegard was predeceased by her husband Ernest (Ernie) Schwartz; parents Wilhelm and Christine (Beck) Schneider; parents in-law Joseph and Anne (Bolen) Schwartz and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Hildegard was born in Kapphenberg, Austria to Wilhelm and Christine (Beck) Schneider on May 5, 1944. Her maternal grandfather immigrated to Canada in 1929 and it wasn’t until almost 20 years later, after the Great Depression and World War II, that he was able to bring his family to Canada. On October 1, 1948, Hildegard along with her parents, uncle and maternal grandmother arrived on SS Samaria in Quebec City. From there, they were sent by train to Neudorf, SK to join her grandfather.
It was in Neudorf that Hildegard began elementary school. In 1952, her and her parents moved to Regina. Hildegard then attended Connaught and Strathcona Schools and finished her elementary school at Thompson School. She played the accordion and worshipped at Trinity Lutheran Church, alongside her parents. Hildegard attended Luther College High School. She enjoyed taking part in all that was offered – sports, choir, intramurals. Following high school, Hildegard went on to the Regina General Hospital’s School of Nursing and graduated in 1965.
Hildegard was a practicing nurse for 2 ½ years until she became a mother and Ernie’s partner in multiple businesses that spanned 45 years. Her entrepreneurial career included bookkeeper (Bubba’s Sanitary Engineers), apartment block owner and bookkeeper (The Victorian), owner and office manager of Schwartz Homes (Garden of Eden in White City) and owner, manager and salesperson for Schwartz Insurance Brokers in White City, Vibank, Odessa, Francis and Sedley. Her professional life was marked by a natural aptitude for connecting with people and commitment to service.
Hildegard met Ernie Schwartz at the annual Granite Curling Club banquet and dance on April 28, 1962. On October 16, 1965 they were married. In 1967 and 1969, they welcomed son Daryl and daughter Denise. In 1992, they celebrated Daryl and Shannon’s (Schultz) wedding and in 1993, Denise and Paul’s (Hawman) wedding. In 1995, the excitement of grandchildren began with the birth of Courtney and one year after the other came Joelle, Logan and Brittany (three years to the day). In 2024, Hildegard celebrated her granddaughter Joelle’s marriage to Christopher Smith.
In 1966, Hildegard and Ernie began their traveling adventures by returning to Hildegard’s birthplace, Austria, to visit her grandparents. 1974 was their first sun vacation. From then on, they traveled annually until 2018. They traveled to every continent, apart from Africa and Antarctica, and frequented the Hawaiian Islands and Mexico. With their children and grandchildren, they went on a Cruise and travelled to Hawaii.
Besides traveling, her hobbies and interests included gardening, sewing, preparing and delivering meals to the farm during seeding and harvest, cooking for White City community events, hosting dinners for family and friends, White City Optimist Club, Balgonie and Regina Figure Skating Clubs, Ernie’s date to Balgonie Elks and Austrian Hunting Club events, sausage making, cheering on the Saskatchewan Roughriders and spending time at the family cottage with friends and family. She loved watching Daryl play hockey and spent many hours on the road to and from Denise’s figure skating lessons and competitions; as well as, sewing every skating dress (practice and competition) and knitting every warm-up sweater to match, attaching every sequin meticulously by hand. She was so very proud of both her children. She was subsequently proud of her favourite daughter-in-law, favourite son-in-law and her beloved grandchildren. She was generous with her time, love and gave the biggest hugs.
