September 17, 2025

Donald Colgrove Puff, born on August 9, 1949, shared his last toast of tequila on September 17, 2025 in his hometown of Regina, Saskatchewan. He died with his wife, Robin Smith, by his side, along with loved ones George, Angela, Meagan, Mark and Gwen.
Throughout his life, Don worked hard and was devoted to those closest to him, with a generosity that was as legendary as his convictions. He took immense pride in supporting “his people” and would go without if it meant helping someone he loved. His caring and stubborn nature was also put to good use during his spell as a union leader, working as a champion for others.
Don could be intimidating, with a wicked sense of humour and passion for debate. But his wisdom and kindness shone through for those who took the time to get to know him and spent hours in conversation. He offered a listening ear and found real joy in the successes and happiness of the people around him.
Don loved gatherings and bringing people together, preferring to be quietly in the mix rather than at the centre of attention. His enthusiasm for football was known by all who spent time with him, in particular his devotion to the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the New England Patriots. Beyond sports, Don was well-known in bygone days for his involvement with Buffalo Days and the Rowdy Gang.
Don found joy in life’s simple pleasures: tending to blooming peonies, hanging out with the dogs, and enjoying a roaring fire with good friends. Christmas was his favourite time of year, and he worked hard to make it magical for the children in his life and those passing by, by going all out with lights and decorations during the holidays.
He leaves a legacy of love, resilience, and generosity. Don faced hardship and heartache with resourcefulness and spirit, inspiring many people along the way. As those closest to him recall, “he was at his best when he was needed.” All you had to do was ask.
The family invites friends and loved ones to remember Don as he would want: gathering together, sharing memories and stories, raising a glass, and laughing well into the evening.

Sorry to learn of Don's passing. He was a huge force in the union, always committed to fairness. He was smart and funny and deeply compassionate. He is the sort of person who restores your faith in humanity.

I knew Don for many years while working at the University of Regina. We were both involved with our union, trying to make life better for all of our CUPE brothers and sisters. He taught me a lot about collective bargaining and fighting for our rights. He will be missed. He was a good guy. I'm sure he and Rick Kerr will now be reminiscing together in heaven.

Condolences 💐 to Don’s family and friends. I spoke to a number of former retired co-workers about his passing and a phone call was made to the U of R Administration by one of them and the U of R flag is now flying at half mast in honour of our former UNION CUPE 1975 PRESIDENT DON PUFF.
Don was one of the good guys and was very helpful to me over the years that we worked at the U of R. He in Physical Plant and I in Library Administration. He was no nonsense Don. May he Rest In Eternal Peace and Rise In Glory with his Creator.

My deepest condolences on Don's passing.
Over the course of my long term employment with Campion that housed the union office I enjoyed many hallway chats with Don. We always enjoyed sharing gentle barbs with one another that ended each time with a smile and friendly wave as we went about our business. Don was a good man.

My condolences on your loss. Don was “my” custodian for several years and his kibbitzing was delivered with humour, intelligence and intent. In later years he and I were reps on a major joint U of R /U of S job evaluation program. He was union, I was management. We didn’t always agree, but the discussion and debate was respectful, lively and engaging. Compromise was often achieved. Don added greatly to the development of the university. Again, my sincere sympathy on your loss. Don was a good guy.

So sorry to hear of Don’s passing. He was indeed the hardest working and most dedicated leader in the union movement that I have ever worked with. He spent his career at the University helping those that needed it above himself. He often spent his own time and his own money helping colleagues at the university. He was fair, extremely hard working and a treasure to all at the university. May he rest in peace, he definitely has deserved a well deserved rest. Dave
