It’s with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our loving daughter, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, partner and friend Yuko Kawamata at the age of 65.
Yuko was loved by all who met her. Her spirit for adventure and her sense of humour drew people of all walks of life to her. Yuko’s love for travel was only surpassed by her passion for her garden. In particular Yuko worked tenaciously for the preservation of native plants in Saskatchewan through her own garden endeavors and her hours of volunteer work at Nature Regina and David Suzuki Foundation’s Butterflyway Project. Yuko was also a big fan of eccentric musical projects. In 2013 as a theremin player she participated in the Guiness World record for the largest ensemble of theremins to perform together. A Tokyo girl at heart Yuko managed to adjust her life to the cold, outlying region of Saskatchewan without too many complaints.
Yuko leaves to grieve her devastated partner Michael; her brother Yoshikuni; her in-laws Ed, Rose-Ann and Marie, their spouses; her nieces; and countless friends. Yuko was predeceased by her father Eiji Kawamata, her mother Chie Kawamata, and her mother-in-law Imelda Dancsok.
In accordance to Yuko’s wishes there will not be any funeral service but friends who want to hold a memorial “party” may do so at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to Nature Regina or Carmichael Outreach.

Yuko was a very special spirit, gentle and good-humoured. Yes, the world would be a much better place if there were more people like her who cared so deeply for others and for the natural world. She will be very much missed. Our condolences to Michael who had lost a very special partner.

Yuko and Mike have been our neighbours for the last 2 years. Her way of anything is so graceful and her love for her yard was second to none. I will miss seeing her beautiful face and her grace walking around. Mike so sad for your loss on this beautiful woman ❤️

Yuko didn't just love beauty, she created it, gave generously and always had a twinkle in her eye. She was a meticulous free spirit and a straight talker who loved to joke around. I loved all these things about you Yuko - may you rest in natural great peace. I offer my deepest condolences to Mike.

Yuko was very much appreciated by the Nature Regina volunteers that take care of the Native Plant Garden near the Museum of Natural History, She volunteered at the garden and hosted seed sorting teas at her home. She was a kind and generous friend to Nature Regina.
