Wanda Faye Baker, born August 6, 1965, died in hospital on September 7, 2024 as a result of cardiac arrest.
Wanda was predeceased by her mother, Hilda Baker. She is survived by her father Bill Baker, her daughter Ahleah, her brother Dr. Brian Baker (Michelle Krueger), sister Valerie Kinnear (John), nieces Dr. Ajaccia Baker and Kaleah Baker (Jordan MacNeil), nephew Dr. Ryan Kinnear, three uncles, two aunts and their families.
Wanda had health problems in her late teens and twenties. She suffered a cardiac arrest in 2000. Ahleah, at the age of five, saved Wanda’s life by calling 911 when she found her mother unconscious. Unfortunately, Wanda sustained an acquired brain injury and has been cared for at Pioneer Village and Wascana Rehabilitation Centre in Regina for most of the time since.
Wanda earned a Certificate in Early Childhood Education and worked at a Childcare Centre in British Columbia, returning to Regina, SK in 1996. Wanda also earned a certificate in Commercial Make-up from Avant-Garde College of Esthetics, Regina.
Wanda loved her family, her cats, and her favourite musician Tom Petty. Wanda enjoyed watching Ahleah’s ringette, hockey, soccer and softball games.
For many years, Wanda and Val spent time going out for pizza and caesar salad, so much so, that they should have opened their own restaurant. The past few summers have been spent “cruising Albert” and driving through the park in Val’s Mustang. Wanda described some of these outings as “acting like 16-year-olds” and more than once, the car had to be stopped at a curb while the sisters laughed themselves silly.
Wanda also loved going for drives with Brian and listening to “the oldies” on Jack FM. It was amazing how many of the lyrics Wanda remembered.
Our family wishes to thank Dr. Baird and her incredible team at the Medical Intensive Care Unit, Regina General Hospital for their compassionate and respectful care, support and kind words. We also wish to thank the staff at Pioneer Village and Wascana Rehabilitation Centre for all of their time and consideration in caring for Wanda for all of these years.
Cremation. No public service.
For those wishing to make a donation in Wanda’s memory, we suggest Wascana Rehabilitation Centre, Kinsmen Telemiracle, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or an organization of your choice.
