Roy Berg, formerly of Regina, Saskatchewan and more recently of Chilliwack, British Columbia, passed away on August 31, 2024 at the age of 75. He was born on October 30, 1948 in Regina. Roy was predeceased by his father Edmund Berg in 1988 and his mother Joyce Berg (née Sunde) in 2023. He is survived by his son Christopher Berg; his brothers Dale (Gloria) Berg and Dean (Lynn) Berg; his sister Laurie Hartley; as well as his step-granddaughter Morgan Wingfield and step-great-granddaughter Wrenleigh. Roy came from a large family with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
As a teenager, Roy left home to make his way in the world, eventually becoming a heavy-duty mechanic. He worked for Finning for many years, servicing equipment and engines across various industries. This experience gave him the opportunity to work on oil rigs and live in several countries including Spain, Libya, Venezuela, China, Norway and the United States. In his later years, Roy owned and operated a long-haul semi-truck, which allowed him to travel extensively throughout Canada and the United States.
Roy had a deep love for westerns, war movies, telling jokes and sports. He spent many hours with his Mom watching hockey, baseball and curling. He was an avid fan of American football and enjoyed traveling, often taking his Mom on trips to visit family, explore country music cities, Disneyland and even embark on a cruise to the Bahamas. Family reunions were especially important to him and he had a deep affection for his cats.
After a 10-month battle with cancer, Roy found immense comfort in the support of his family. His nieces, Kelly Henderson and Jennifer Cindrich, were dedicated caregivers throughout his journey, with Kelly standing by his side through every stage of treatment in B.C. In his final months, Roy lived with his cousin Darlene Wilm who provided him with a home and compassionate care during his treatments in Regina. His cousin Kevin Moore remained a close friend and a steady source of strength.
A Celebration of Life was held on September 8, 2024 at Lac Des Roches Lake in British Columbia, a cherished family location. The gathering, originally planned to honor Roy’s Mother, became a dual Celebration of Life, where 35 family members gathered to remember and celebrate both Roy and Joyce.
