December 15, 2025

On December 15, 2025, we said our final goodbye to The Honourable Justice Michael T. Megaw. He was surrounded by his family as he took his last peaceful breath. His journey with liver cancer was sudden and brief. However, his final week at the Pasqua Hospital was the most peaceful and comfortable part of that journey. We are deeply appreciative of the compassionate care provided to our beloved Mike by the staff in the Palliative Care Unit.
Mike, Michael, Honourable Justice, Dad, Papa – we all love and admire you so much. We know you will continue to be our guiding light as we move forward, until we meet again.
Left to mourn Michael are his loving wife and best friend, Cindy Megaw; their children Joe (Kristin) Megaw and their children Bos, Briggs and Banner; Samantha Megaw, Jamieson (Michael) Alexander and their twin boys Noah and Forrest; and Ellen Megaw; He is also survived by his brother Louis (Lois) Megaw, Carol-Anne (Mike), nephews, nieces, and many dear friends.
Michael was born as a first-generation Canadian on November 29th, 1960, in Kindersley, Saskatchewan. His parents, Joseph and Margaret Megaw, immigrated from Northern Ireland in 1957 and their family lived in a few communities within Saskatchewan before settling in Regina in 1971.
Together with his wife, Cindy Megaw, they celebrated almost 38 years of marriage and 50 years together. They were married on May 28, 1988. Having first met in the Regina Police Junior Band when they were just 14 and 15 years old. They had been inseparable ever since, and the love they shared was genuine, true, and special for all who were fortunate enough to witness it. Their love for each other deepened further when they welcomed their four beautiful children into the world. Michael’s love for his family was evident and only grew even stronger as they did.
Justice Megaw obtained his Bachelor of Administration in 1983 from the University of Regina (with distinction) and his Bachelor of Laws (with distinction) in 1984 from the University of Saskatchewan. He was admitted to the Saskatchewan Bar in 1985 and his practice largely focused on family law, civil litigation and criminal law. Justice Megaw was awarded Queen’s Counsel in 2011 before being appointed to the Saskatchewan Court of King’s Bench Family Law Division.
The Honourable Justice Michael Megaw was appointed to the Court of King’s Bench on March 6th, 2014. He was also appointed as a Deputy Judge of Nunavut, where he had the privilege of sitting on several occasions. He greatly valued serving the smaller communities of Nunavut and, true to his nature, took care to build meaningful connections with community members wherever he sat.
Justice Megaw served as the southern administrative judge for the Court of King’s Bench from 2021-2023. Although appointed to the Family division, he readily accepted difficult and high-profile cases in the General Division, discharging those responsibilities with honour, integrity and an unwavering sense of duty.
Since 2021, he served as the Saskatchewan member of the Advisory Committee on Judicial Ethics and became its Co-Chair in 2023. He also acted as the Court’s representative on the Hague Convention – a multilateral treaty designed to protect children from the harmful effects of international parental abduction.
Previous to his appointment, he was in-house counsel for Saskatchewan Government Insurance from 1989 to 1990, an Associate at Robertson Stromberg from 1990 to 1992, a partner at Shirkey, Ulmer, Willner & Megaw from 1992 to 2001 and most recently a partner at Gerrand Rath Johnson LLP from 2001 to 2014. Throughout his practice, Justice Megaw appeared before all levels of Court, including the Supreme Court of Canada. He was an active member of the Law Society and has held many positions within the organisation. He was a Bencher from 2010 to 2014, has Chaired various committees, and was a frequent presenter and facilitator at numerous continuing legal education events.
Justice Megaw’s love for the Court of Law was surpassed only by the love he had for his family.
A man of many interests and talents, Michael had a dream of learning to play guitar. One thing to note, if he sets a goal, he will surely achieve it. This remained true as he picked up the guitar in his late 50’s, committed to learning it and landed himself in a band playing alongside his wife, Cindy. In the later years of his music career, he expanded his musical skillset and learned to play the bass. He and Cindy converted their basement into a music studio where they would spend many nights practicing together and with friends. Another one of his dreams was to learn to speak French. He began lessons in 2017 and devoted his time to it, becoming fluent and deemed bilingual within 5 years of picking it up.
Michael’s kids were fortunate to spend extra time with their dad on the ice as he coached each of their hockey teams. His natural ability to lead with integrity – while always leaving room for fun – translated seamlessly into his coaching. He took a genuine interest in every player and often said, “If we win every game but the players have not personally progressed, I have failed them.” Known as the dad of the rink, Michael always found a way to make the experience fun and meaningful for everyone.
The qualities that came so naturally to Michael formed a consistent theme throughout his life. He was a man of deep integrity and intelligence, humble yet generous, with a quick wit and a warm, hearty smile that could instantly put others at ease. His wisdom and guidance were deeply valued and lovingly remembered. He will be profoundly missed by many. Though he is gone, a part of Michael remains with those he leaves behind, carried in the lessons he taught, the laughter he shared, and the love he gave. Those who knew him will carry that part forward, always grateful for the blessing of having had Michael in their lives.
We will miss our rock, our pillar, and the leader of our band. May you rest peacefully, always remembered and always loved.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Justice Megaw's family and friends. I had the honor of clerking for Justice Megaw. He always made me feel valued and heard as a court clerk, and he always found time to answer any of my questions. He was so patient and kind to me and to anyone who appeared before him. Justice Megaw will be missed in the court but more so missed as such a kind compassionate man and friend who made such a lasting impact.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you Cindy, and your family. I had the privilege of spending a lot of time with Mike over the years. Upon hearing of the news, I found a quiet place in the house and listened to the first album by Boston - one which he and I both loved back in the day. It brought back some wonderful memories. Rest in peace friend.

Cindy and family, John and I were so very sorry to hear of Mike’s passing. Although our paths didn’t cross often in recent years, I had quite literally just mentioned him. I was reorganizing my stamps and commenting on how the shelves Mike built for Starstruck more than 25 years ago are still sturdy, strong, and in daily use. It felt like such a fitting metaphor for Mike—always ready to help, to support, and to offer solid, thoughtful ideas.
In more recent years, I deeply admired his dedication, insight, and commitment in his professional role. I am grateful our paths crossed and know that his positive impact will continue to live on through so many. Our deepest sympathy to all of you.

Cindy and family, we are so saddened to learn about Mike’s passing. We have so many wonderful memories of Mike at the hockey rink, where he instilled fun and passion for the girls’ game of hockey. He set the bar high for making the season enjoyable and memorable. He was indeed as passionate about his work. We truly admired his integrity and compassion to protect children from harm. We hope all of you can find comfort in knowing he made a positive difference in so many lives. Thinking of you all.
