Greaves, Melvena (Mel) Joyce Marie

November 19, 2024

Melvena (Mel) Joyce Marie Greaves

Melvena ("Mel") passed away in her sleep on November 19, 2024 after an extended battle with Lewy Body Dementia. She was 81 years old.

Mel was born in Star City, SK on December 1, 1942 to John (Jack) and Ellen (Nellie) Greaves (nee Broeckel). She was predeceased by her parents Jack and Nellie Greaves, and her brother Ken Greaves. She is survived by her sisters Verna Curtis, Reta Lambert (Morris), and Pat Carson; her three children James Greaves (Alex Larson), Jenean Jackson (Bryan), and John Underhill; her beloved granddaughters Samara Jackson (Braden Miner), and Kaitlin Wingert (Andrew); her first great-grandchild Arthur Wingert.

Mel grew up on a farm outside of Valparaiso, SK. She lived in Winnipeg, MB from 1960 to 1979. In August of 1979, she moved to Regina, SK to be closer to family. A year later she started her career as an Industrial Cook for Dale’s House, a home for troubled youth, and later in a similar role for Paul Dojack Youth Centre. She held this role until she retired in 2007.

Mel found joy in in spending time with family and in creative pursuits such as photography and painting. She was passionate about her grandchildren and sharing the world with them was a priority.

Many thanks for the excellent care she received from her doctors, especially Dr. Schussler, Dr. Veloso, and Dr. Hansia. Our family is incredibly grateful to the staff, nurses and care aides at Regina Lutheran Special Care Home, who provided excellent care, understanding, compassion, and companionship to mom and our family.

A Celebration of Life and interment will be held in the Spring of 2025. Details will be announced at a later date.

Donations in memory of Melvena can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan.

Remember Me This Way When I come to the end of my journey And I travel my last weary mile, Just forget if you can, that I ever frowned And remember only the smile. Forget unkind words I have spoken; Remember some good I have done. Forget that I ever had heartache And remember I've had loads of fun. Forget that I've stumbled and blundered And sometimes fell by the way. Remember I have fought some hard battles And won, ere the close of the day. Then forget to grieve for my going, I would not have you sad for a day, But in summer just gather some flowers And remember the place where I lay, And come in the shade of evening When the sun paints the sky in the west Stand for a few moments beside me And remember only my best.
