January 19, 2024
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Larry Wayne Frank Nerbas, on January 19, 2024 at the age of 73 in Regina, Saskatchewan.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife Carolyn Nerbas (nee Goy) of Indian Head, Saskatchewan; children Kimberley Nerbas Hartley (Craig Hartley) of Airdrie, Alberta, Avery Nerbas of Yorkton, Saskatchewan and Cheryl Rector (Matthew Rector) of Strathmore, Alberta. Larry was proudly awaiting the birth of baby Rector that will be blessing our family in a few weeks. Larry is also survived by his sister Donalda Hambleton (Frank Hambleton) of Winnipeg, Manitoba and brother-in-law Terry Goy (Darlene Goy) of Weekes, Saskatchewan, along with his aunt, numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, neighbours and friends. Larry was predeceased by his parents Bernard Nerbas and Eva Nerbas (nee Morrow), his parents-in-law Herbert Goy and Laurine Goy (nee Johnson), brother-in law Barry Goy and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Larry's entire life showed a testament to the strength and courage he had in order to handle the numerous challenges in his physical health that he experienced first as an infant, later as a teenager requiring extensive surgeries and physical rehabilitation in Winnipeg and multiple times through his adult life with medical conditions resulting in surgeries, hospitalizations and physical rehabilitation in Regina. Larry's determination and tenacity was a strength that he taught each of his children who exemplify that trait every day in their lives.
Larry was born on July 3, 1950 in Beardmore, Ontario and also lived in Kamsack, Saskatchewan, before spending much of his childhood proudly growing up in The Pas, Manitoba. He spoke often about the experiences he had with the Boy Scouts, playing hockey as a goalie, being a paper boy, later coaching and mentoring young hockey players, stock car racing, golfing and the visits to his family's farms. As a teenager, Larry developed an interest in working in grocery stores and had an opportunity to work with Smith's Groceries prior to attending the Red River Community College for meat cutting. After his certification, he returned to work at Smith's Groceries as a meatcutter for many years, Larry then went on to work in Sturgis before moving to Indian Head where he worked at the IGAs in Indian Head, Fort Qu'Appelle and Regina before his early retirement. In retirement, Larry was able to work for the Commissionaires and he was proud to be a guard for the Indian Head RCMP.
In 1974, he met the love of his life Carolyn and they married on July 10, 1976. Larry spent so many happy moments on Carolyn's family farm and enjoyed visiting and playing cards with family and friends. Larry also gained a keen interest in gardening with Carolyn and together they spent their springs and summers growing bounties of fruits and vegetables that they would can and freeze. Larry and Carolyn also spent a great deal of time in the kitchen making perogies, cabbage rolls and trying the various recipes that Carolyn would print from the internet. Larry loved sports and could talk about hockey and football for hours, he could be counted on to be calling his family and friends to discuss the latest sports news, scores and trades. Larry also had a great sense of humour and he could lift up others spirits by a joke or comment. His wit will be missed by all that knew him.
Larry volunteered for the President of Minor Hockey in Indian Head for a year, and he coached softball on the teams his children were on when they were young, as well was a Leader for the Beaver Scouts. Larry had a soft spot for animals and especially loved his visits with Howard and Hudson. Although in later years, he did not spend much time with Maxwell or Kona, he enjoyed asking about them and enjoyed the stories shared with him.
Larry's love for his family was evident and he will be sorely missed. A private graveside service will be held at a later date to ensure that his life well led is honored and celebrated.
