David Fredrick Boychuk passed away peacefully on Friday, March 7, 2025, at the age of 75, following a courageous one-year battle with stomach cancer. He spent his final day surrounded by his loving family.
David was born to Fred and Pauline Boychuk (nee Danyluk) and grew up on the family farm. He attended country schools and Kamsack Junior/High School, Kamsack, Saskatchewan where he developed a lifelong passion for sports, particularly playing fastball with the Kamsack Royals and Wroxton Canadians. After graduating from Grade 12, David ventured to Lynn Lake, Manitoba, where he worked underground at Sherwood Gordon Mine.
David met his wife Charlene in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, moved to Regina, Saskatchewan and they were married on October 11, 1975. David was a self-taught welder, his dedication and skill led him to a successful career at Crown Manufacturing, Provincial Hydraulics, Berendsen Fluid Power, and Procor, where he maintained railway cars with precision and care.
David's passions were many. A devoted sports enthusiast, he was a die-hard fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Yankees, and Saskatchewan Roughriders. He loved collecting hockey cards and had a keen interest in income tax and finances. Throughout his life, he actively participated in sports—bowling, broomball, and softball in the Molson Mount Pleasant Softball League. He continued his love for the game by playing senior slow pitch until just last year.
David was also a dedicated umpire for Softball Saskatchewan for several decades. His expertise took him to National Softball and Slow Pitch Championships across Canada. He was a "walking rule book” with his knowledge and dedication in the sport. He also self-taught himself to do income tax, becoming known for his proficiency and meticulous attention to detail.
David was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Pauline, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 49 years, Charlene; his sons, Colin and his daughter Ja'Lynn, and Justin (Jamie) and their daughters Jane and Josie. He is also survived by his brothers, Gerald (Margaret) of Yorkton and Herbie of Sherwood Park, Alberta and his sister, Doreen Prokopchuk (Randy) of Yorkton.
The family would like to thank Dr. Iqbal, Dr. Mahmood and the staff of Allan Blair Cancer Centre, the Palliative Care nurses, the doctors, nurses and staff on Unit 4B at the Pasqua Hospital as well as the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre Hospice staff, all in Regina, for their compassionate care.
At David’s request there will be no funeral service. A Family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Donations in David’s memory may be made to the Saskatchewan Cancer Society.

Dave or "blue" as I called him used to umpire our games in the Regina Mens Slopitch games back in the day. Right from day 1 we had many great talks about baseball, his career and how I always said the Habs were better than the Leafs. While we maybe questioned each other on the diamond the odd time, we each had a mutual respect for each other. Blue, in all of my time on the diamond, you were one of the guys that stood out above all. I considered you a friend first and then an umpire second. Heaven has just gained one of the smartest guys I knew. RIP Blue! I'm sure you are already behind home plate umping! God Speed!
