October 23, 2024
Annette Therese Delanghe (nee Carron), age 96, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2024. Born to Mildred and Sylvester Carron, she grew up in Seaforth and Paincourt, Ontario.
In 1948, she married Romain Delanghe (deceased 1992) and together they raised nine children: Mary, Ted (Deb), George (Wendy), Roger (Denise), Katy (Bill, deceased 2019), Edie (Laury), Peg (deceased 2004), Frank (Heather), and Patti (Steve). The family farmed for many years in Northwood prior to selling the farm in 1967 and moving into the city of Chatham, Ontario.
A lifelong learner, Mom encouraged all of her children to pursue post-secondary studies. She led by example: in her 40s, after raising eight children, she returned to school. Not deterred by being one of the oldest students in her class, she completed the nursing program through the Chatham Kent General Hospital. When she graduated, she held not only her diploma, but also her ninth child, born between her first and second years of study. In her 50s, after a career in nursing, she moved to Saskatchewan and earned a Bachelor of Social Work degree from the University of Regina. Mom was an avid reader throughout her entire life: well into her 90s, she enjoyed reading books and keeping up with world news each day. She was grateful for the outreach services of the Regina Public Library which supplied her with new books each month. Embracing technology, she used her computer daily to stay current with world news and to keep in touch with family and friends.
Being active in the community was always important to Mom. While raising her family in Chatham, she was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary League with the local Catholic church. After moving to Saskatchewan, she volunteered with the University of Regina, acting as a homestay mother to help newcomers learn English. She was a long-time member of the Regina Ladies Choir, Regina Square Dance Club, and loved playing cards, especially cribbage and euchre. Prior to COVID, she played cards at Broadway United Church and Selo Gardens. Well past her 96th birthday, she still swam regularly at the YMCA and Lawson Aquatic Centre.
Mom loved music: her children vividly recall her playing piano and singing to them while growing up. After moving into Davis Mews apartments, she took great delight in sharing her love of music with other residents by playing the piano in the community room. Social distancing mandates during COVID slowed her down, but couldn’t stop her. As soon as restrictions were lifted, she resumed playing piano in her building, bringing much needed joy to so many during a pandemic.
One of Mom’s favourite activities was sewing: from her early years of creating many of her children’s clothes, including recital costumes, to running her own dressmaking and alteration business, rarely was there a day when she was not at her sewing machine and serger. Generous with her time and talents, upon discovering that many of her neighbours used walkers as mobility aids, Mom quickly set about to create walker bags and donated them to anyone in need.
Mom will be dearly missed by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Romain Delanghe; parents Mildred and Sylvester Carron; her cherished sisters Mary Robertson and Margaret Jubenville; two brothers Edward Carron and Ted Carron; her dear son-in-law Bill Adams; and her beloved daughter; Peg Delanghe.
A Family Celebration of Annette’s Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the YMCA or to a charity of your choice.

Rest in peace, Aunt Net. I will always remember "Aunt Net cookies" from my time at the farm. And thank you for the euchre lessons, though I'll never be as good at the game as you. I hope you are getting lots of euchre games in "up there". And say hello to Peg.

I used to call Annette, Granny so I will refer to her as such.
I recall meeting Granny as an ESL student at the Uof R for the first time. It was her daughter Peg’s house, and they were playing Euchre, and they tried to teach me, too.
Later, I became an errand boy at Granny’s house for many years. She has been a great ESL teacher, trying so hard to correct my pronunciation and grammar, and proofreader for the university assignments.
As an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher, Granny shared her love of language and Canadian culture with students from around the world. Her patience created a welcoming environment.
Beyond Granny’s role as a teacher, she was a cultural guide, seamstress and an understanding host, always eager to share her rich knowledge of Canada and Western values.
When I graduated from school, I was still an errand boy for more years, and then I had more time, so we played more card games. Especially in wintertime, when we cannot go outside, there are more card games. During winter time, Granny told me a lot of stories about growing up in a farming community in Southern Ontario which reminded me of similar stories my grandparents told me in Japan. It was an extraordinary Dejavu experience across the opposite side of the pond.
Anyhow, I believe Granny had lived her life to the fullest, and as she used to claim when she goes up there, she is going to play cards with Peg non stop so hopefully she can do it.
